A bill proposing the establishment of Ogoja State has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by Godwin Offiono and three co-sponsors, the constitution alteration bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create an additional state in Nigeria’s South-South region.

During the plenary session, Offiono emphasized that the “essence of this bill is rested on equity,” highlighting the need for equitable representation and resource distribution in the area.

If enacted, the bill would increase the number of states in the South-South to seven.
