The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt condolences to South Korea following the devastating crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216, which resulted in the tragic loss of 179 lives.

The accident occurred on Sunday, December 29, 2024, when the Boeing 737-800, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, attempted to land at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea.

The aircraft veered off the runway and struck a wall, triggering a massive explosion. Of the 181 passengers and crew on board, only two survived.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government expressed its deep sorrow and solidarity with the South Korean people during this challenging period.

The Nigerian government described the incident as a profound tragedy, extending sympathies to the families of the victims while reaffirming its support for South Korea.

The statement read, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to express her sincere condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Korea for the unfortunate crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216 that occurred on Sunday, December 29th, 2024.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria sympathises with the Government of South Korea and the families of the victims of the deadly plane crash.”
