Governor Babagana Zulum‘s government of Borno State has prohibited street hawking and other unlawful activities within the Maiduguri metropolis.
In a statement released on Friday, the General Manager of the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board, Limán Mustapha, indicated that this prohibition aligns with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law enacted in 2002.
He specified that the board has outlawed street hawking, the operation of tricycle services, and the activities of generator mechanics in the vicinity of Maiduguri’s Post Office and Monday Market.
Mustapha further noted that the board had prohibited any activities on pedestrian walkways, at junctions and roundabouts, the sale of engine oil on road reservations, the dumping of sand or construction materials, the mixing of cement on roadways, and the establishment of boreholes adjacent to the roads.
The manager stated that individuals affected by this directive are required to vacate the occupied areas immediately.
“The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law,” adding that the measure would ensure a clean, safe and organised urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.
He called on residents and business owners to comply with the ban to avoid legal action.
