The Queen is said to have declined an award from The Oldie of the Year Awards because she “didn’t believe she satisfied the required criteria."
Her Majesty, who is 95 years old, declined the award, saying, “You are only as old as you feel," before adding that she hopes they find a more “deserving recipient."
The awards’ chairman, Gyles Brandreth, wrote a letter to the monarch’s private secretary, Sir Edward Young, asking whether she would receive the Oldie of the Year award.
However, in a letter published in the November issue of the magazine, her assistant private secretary Tom Laing-Baker wrote: ‘Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient.’
Her Majesty’s daughter-in-law, Camilla, attended this year’s Oldie awards, which were held at the Savoy Hotel in London on Tuesday afternoon, October 19th.
The Oldie of the Year Awards ceremony has been hosted by The Oldie Magazine for nearly thirty years to honor persons who have made a significant contribution to public life.
Last year’s honor went to Petula Clark, a Broadway singer who had a brilliant eight-decade career during the Blitz.
Delia Smith, Bob Harris, Barry Humphries, Margaret Seaman, Roger McGough, Dr Saroj Datta, Dr Mridul Kumar Datta, and Sir Geoff Hurst are among the winners of the Oldie Awards 2021.
