The Seyi Tinubu Movement (STM), a group supporting the ideals of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has dismissed speculations that he plans to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election. The group urged the public to disregard the rumour, which it described as baseless and unauthorised.
The speculation, which recently circulated online, alleged that Seyi Tinubu was eyeing Lagos’ top political office. In response, Akanbi A. Saheed Afonja, former Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Youth Development and a spokesperson for STM, condemned the claims.
“Our attention has been drawn to speculations across various media outlets by both faceless and known groups, with even some so-called elder statesmen fueling the narrative rather than addressing the facts,” Afonja said in a statement shared with The West.
He clarified that Seyi Tinubu has no intention of contesting in the 2027 elections or any future office, stating: “Mr. Seyi Tinubu has not declared any ambition to run for public office. While he is eminently qualified as a Nigerian youth to pursue any aspiration, these baseless rumours are unwarranted.”
The statement criticized individuals spreading the speculation, labelling them “fifth columnists” and cautioning against the dissemination of false information. It stressed the importance of protecting Seyi Tinubu’s reputation and warned against heating up the political space unnecessarily.
“We urge the public to disregard news from unauthorized sources who do not represent Mr. Seyi Tinubu. Their intent is merely to spread falsehood and disrupt the polity,” the statement concluded.
The group emphasized Seyi Tinubu’s focus on his personal and professional endeavours, maintaining that his ambitions remain distinct from his family lineage or political speculation.
