The world football governing council, Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) released its new world ranking last month, and it doesn’t seem like the Super Eagles are flying. Their poor performance earlier this year saw the Super Eagles drop from 38 to 35 in November and it’s looking like they are in love with that spot.
Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles head coach, has failed to win any game with the senior team this year. The German has only managed to secure 3 draws and lost 1. The Super Eagles are only leading Group L in the AFCON tournament because of the 2 games won last year before covid-19.
Super Eagles are behind Senegal (20), Tunisia (26), Algeria (31), and Morocco (35). But with the quality of players in the Super Eagles squad, one would think Gernot Rohr would have achieved more.
His consistent disappointments have now opened a more viable option for Nigerians to consider—a local coach. The last time Nigeria won a major trophy, AFCON 2013, a Nigerian was the Head coach— Late Stephen Keshi.
Since Gernot Rohr took over the Super Eagles in 2016, he has failed to bring home any trophy with the team.
The poor performance of the Super Eagles in the world and the track record of local coaches shows that NFF needs to make a change now.
Belgium retains the number 1 spot in the recent FIFA ranking, followed by France (2) and Brazil (3). Cristiano’s Ronaldo Portugal comes fifth while Messi’s Argentina comes seventh.
